How Do Motion Controllers and SADAs Work Together on Satellites?

Motion controllers and SADAs (Solar Array Drive Assemblies) are closely linked in satellite systems because they enable satellites to keep their solar arrays pointed at the Sun for maximum power.

Here’s how they work together:

1. Role of SADAs

A Solar Array Drive Assembly (SADA) is the mechanical/electromechanical unit that physically rotates the solar arrays. It typically includes gears, bearings, and a stepper or brushless motor to provide smooth, precise rotation.

The SADA provides 1-axis or 2-axis rotation, depending on whether the satellite needs just east–west tracking or full sun-tracking capability.

2. Role of Motion Controllers

A motion controller is the electronics/firmware that commands and regulates the motor inside the SADA. It takes high-level commands from the satellite’s onboard computer (e.g., "rotate solar array at 0.01°/sec").

The controller translates those commands into precise current/voltage signals for the SADA motor. It manages closed-loop control: monitoring sensors (encoders, resolvers, or potentiometers) for feedback to ensure accurate positioning, smooth motion, and minimal vibration.

3. How They Work Together

The SADA is the hardware that moves the panels. The motion controller is the "brains" that makes sure the movement is precise, safe, and aligned with mission needs.

Together they form a Solar Array Drive Electronics (SADE) system:

Satellite computer → Motion controller → SADA motor + feedback → Solar array rotates.

4. Benefits of the Integration

  1. Maximizes power generation by keeping arrays sun-pointed.
  2. Protects satellite health: motion controllers prevent overshoot, jitter, or stalling.
  3. Longevity: smooth motor control reduces wear on gears and bearings.
  4. Redundancy & fault tolerance: motion controllers can detect anomalies in the SADA and switch to backup modes.

In short: the SADA is the muscle, and the motion controller is the brain, working together so the satellite can reliably generate power throughout its mission.
